Q: How does solar PV work?
A: Solar PV panels are made from a semi-conductor material that light and converts it into direct current electricity. The inverter then turns the electricity into alternating electricity which matches the main grid supply. The inverter is connected to the main fuse board of the property. Q: How much roof space do I need for solar panels? A: A 1KW system will take up about 9m2 of roof space. Q: How is the PV array attached to the roof? A: The PV is attached to the roof using a panel mounting system. It is possible to install roof integrated systems but these are more expensive. Above roof mounting systems are more common, these consist of rails fitted over the roof tiles with anchors attached to the structure beneath. Q: How much energy does the average home require? A: This depends on you the consumer, obviously the less you waste the less you need. To assess your current needs add up your units consumed on your last 4 electricity bills, or contact your supplier and ask them what is your average electrical consumption is per annum. This is by far the best way to size a system rather than individual use. An average size 3 bed roomed semi detached house can produce 30-50% of its electrical needs using a 2kw system. A: A solar PV system will still generate electricity during daylight hours whether the sun is out or not. Q: How long does a PV system take to install? A: A PV system will take between one and two days to install depending on the size of the system. Q: Do I need planning permission? A: In most cases you will not require planning permission although certain areas such as conservation areas and areas of natural beauty will have their own regulations. It is advisable to check with your local planning office before installing solar panels. Q: How long will my PV system last for? A: Our well designed system will operate well in excess of the manufacturers 20 year warranty. A PV system with no moving parts has a lifetime expectancy of 30 years. Q: Can I get paid for electricity I generate? A: Yes you can although the tariffs vary from supplier to supplier. The Feed-in Tariff (FiT) started in April 2010 and mean that you will be paid a rate per KWh of electricity generated. For more information see our information of Feed-in Tariffs. Q: What is the largest system I can install? A: There is no limit on the size of system you can have installed. If you would like to have a system installed that is over 4KW then you would need permission from the district network operator.
