Solar Photovoltaic (Solar PV) systems harness the sun’s energy and convert it into zero carbon electricity which can be used run  appliances and lighting within the home. Solar PV systems require only daylight and not direct sunlight and therefore are suitable for many properties.

The system has two main components; the solar PV panels themselves and a DC/AC inverter.

Solar PV panels
These are the principle components of a solar PV system. Solar panels are mounted on the roof of a building and contain a series of photovoltaic (PV) cells that convert natural light into electricity. Panels can be installed on any roof or wall as long as it faces within ninety degrees of south and is not heavily shaded.

DC/AC Inverter
The DC/AC inverter converts the direct current that the solar PV panels create into alternating current electricity to match the mains electrical grid supply. If the building is not grid connected then a battery bank normally replaces the inverter to store the generated electricity.
